I want to help. Where do I start?

At the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, we ask every donor, “What’s important to you?” That’s because what’s important to our donors is what’s important to us, whether a donor’s interest lies in the arts, education, the environment, animal welfare, or any other charitable cause.

We can help you connect with the charitable causes you care about. And it's easy! Search online at www.donoredge.org to zoom in on the nonprofit organization providing services to help your cause. Want to connect with a real person? The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation staff is here for you.

Recently we've had a few requests from people who are passionate about supporting military personnel and their families, but they didn't know where to start. They called the Community Foundation (816.842.0944 or info@gkccf.org) for help. We began with DonorEdge, our online database that has detailed information of more than 600 local nonprofits. From there we pooled organizations that fit these criteria such as: American Red Cross - Wyandotte County Chapter and Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project. We can also direct you to additional helpful resources. In this case, the Web site America Supports You is the a good fit.

Tips for reading profiles on DonorEdge:

1. Look for profiles displaying a Check Mark icon. That means the information has been reviewed for accuracy and is up to date.

2. Each nonprofit lists its top five needs right below the mission statement. This is a great place to find opportunities for in-kind donations.

3. You can donate directly to any nonprofit from its profile using your credit card. (Perfect for racking up frequent flyer miles while giving back to the community!)

4. The program section in each profile tells you what the organization is doing to make Kansas City a better place. After reading it, you should know what your donation will achieve and how that nonprofit is measuring its success.
