The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s (IEI) mission is to inspire and nurture future generations of entrepreneurs and deliver transformational entrepreneurship education and experiences for all UMKC students. Established in 2005, the Institute’s vision is to be a world’s leading research and education institute for entrepreneurship and innovation. The Institute will deliver unsurpassed outcomes through educational and experiential learning programs which provide students the entrepreneurial skills needed for creating and managing new high-growth enterprises. The IEI’s Academic Programs include: BBA with entrepreneurship emphasis; competitive MBA program with an entrepreneurship emphasis; Executive MBA for aspiring leaders; and a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship and Innovation within the existing interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at UMKC. The Institute’s goal is annual creation of 100 exceptionally well-trained entrepreneurs and 10 high-growth ventures.
Key staff
Michael Song, Ph.D., Executive Director, holds the Charles N. Kimball, MRI/Missouri Endowed Chair in Management of Technology and Innovation and is Professor of Marketing. He received his Master’s degree from Cornell University and an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Dr. Song is ranked as the World’s #1 Innovation Management Scholar by the Journal of Product Innovation Management in 2007, one of the top 20 technology management scholars by R&D Management in 2006, and one of the most prolific researchers in the technology and innovation management field by the International Association of Technology Management in 2004 and in 2008. He has published over 90 articles in academic journals and is also a Senior Fellow in Entrepreneurship Research at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
Mark Parry, Ph.D., holds the Ewing M. Kauffman/Missouri Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurial Leadership and is Professor of Marketing. He received an M.A. from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1988. Prior to joining the Bloch School, he was a Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School at the University of Virginia. Dr. Parry is ranked #11 Innovation Management Scholar by the Journal of Product Innovation Management in 2007, has authored more than 30 articles, and has received numerous other distinguished honors and awards.
Accomplishments
• IEI currently houses 6 world-class tenure-track faculty members (with an additional 7 to be added for a total of 13 world-class tenure-track faculty members)
• Developed key education programs at all levels: new undergraduate curriculum in entrepreneurship; new Master’s level entrepreneurship curriculum; interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation courses; EMBA Entrepreneurship and Innovation track
• UMKC is among the top 12 universities in the world to offer a Ph.D. program in entrepreneurship and innovation
• Formed strategic partnerships with Midwest Research Institute, UMKC Technologies, Hallmark, and others to recruit and leverage technologies for the Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation course
• Since 2006, over 20 successful students ventures have been launched
• Developed and implemented campus-wide entrepreneurship education initiatives for other UMKC Schools / Colleges: Entrepreneurship Immersion; Entrepreneurship Certificate; and Entrepreneurship Minor
• Since 2006, over 750 UMKC students have taken entrepreneurship courses
Goals
• Complete the matching fund to match the grant from the Kauffman Foundation
• Hire third endowed chair position (Bloch/Missouri Endowed Chair) and six additional tenure-track faculty members
• Continue and increase research productivity
• Expand campus-wide entrepreneurship education initiatives for all UMKC Schools / Colleges
• Implement additional entrepreneurship research, education and experiential learning programs
